IRVINE, Calif. – July 24, 2007 – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft®, its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), has reached a new milestone, with a player base now totaling more than 9 million subscribers worldwide...

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules.
Not posted here before. Just so you know where I'm coming from. I am WoW gamer who has just returned to GW whilst taking a break from WoW. Blizzard haven't as you stated said they include all accounts. In fact in this press release they state the complete opposite.

Now I'm not as naive as to think the numbers aren't fudged some how, but I think a lot of people fail to realise how popular this game actually is.

Numbers like these don't include such things as people who have 2 accounts. My boss who is an avid MMO player always has 2 accounts (Inc. GW).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there probably is somewhere around 9 million "active" accounts, but as to whether there are 9 million people playing. I really doubt it very much.

WoW:

-long time to pass a level
-long time to find someone who doesn't do HM dungeons
(so, for new people, it's really hard to do dungeons in Nm in Wow now, because all guilds, guildies, etc have already stuff, reputations and don't want to spend more time in NM)
-HL people, for 90%, talks only about Karazhan
-Finish the whole game is nearly impossible (Illidan,...)
-comic graphics
-money spend in broken armors

GW

-easy to understand
-linear
-too quickly finished
-beautiful graphics
-no monthly fees
-presents at birthday, events,...

some people will say that there are a lot of young people in GW...There are a lot of old people in WoW but some of them believe they are God

There are good and bad points on each of these games...You'll better try each one and choose by yourself.
You'll see what kind of gameplay you want more

Having played both, there are things to like and dislike about both.

Likes in WoW:
  1. Open world - encourages more immersive experience. (Once I was walking by and saw a low level getting killed, and I helped them)
  2. Auction House -- woot!
  3. Email - you can send stuff, money, or play invites without receiver being online
  4. Stable - multiple pets FTW!

Dislikes in WoW:
  1. Grind - too much time needs to be invested to get to the "good stuff"
  2. Travel - OMG if i have to ride one more hippogriff.......
  3. Subscription fee - made me feel pressure to play to "get my money's worth". That makes the game a chore, not fun.
  4. Ninjas - Nothing worse than fighting your way to a chest only to have someone steal it before you can open it.

Likes in GW:
  1. Fast level - doesn't take too long to become powerful for any char
  2. Beautiful - I love sometimes just being a tourist
  3. Storyline - I liked the stories told for the most part.
  4. My stuff! - drops assigned so everyone gets a share.

Dislikes in GW:
  1. With henchies, heroes and elitist snobs, hard to get a group of real folks that want to have fun!
  2. No auction house -- cmon GW!!
  3. Too much pathing -- once in WoW, I swam up the coast for hours because I wanted to. You are very limited in where you can go in GW.

All in all, I stuck with GW because the dislikes are minor in comparison, and with WoW feeling like a chore, I didn't want to play it. GW you can pick up and put down and not be bored -- great for the casual gamer.

BTW = I didn't address PVP because I rarely PVP So there's my nickel's worth!

There are a number of reasons I don't play WoW and prefer GW. I will give you two, the monthly fee and the fact that you always get some moron who will either steal from you or sit and wait on things to reanimate in farming.

No thanks. I would get too aggravated.

I used to play WoW and currently starting to get back on GW and I would say that if you can afford the monthly fees and enjoy playing for more time to get to the highest level then get it DEFINETLY. The main bad reasons about WoW is that you have to pay monthly but let me tell you this. GW makes money in another clever way. Say you want to make a solo farmer which after you get many lvl 20s you will probably start doing. To make the best you need skills from prophecies, factions,nf and maybe eye of the north. So it kind of depends how long you actually will play these games because both of them will probably make you spend quite a bit on them. WoW also has a WAY bigger map then GW and also a problem that I find with GW is if you don't have every GW game to play with friends on many different areas and stuff it gets boring after you get to lvl 20.

Try READING the rest of my previous post to see WHY wow does NOT have 9 million active accounts. Theres a big difference between claiming to have sold 4 million copies of a game and saying you have 9 million people paying you a sub each month when your quaterly records show otherwise.

If I could be bothered I would find the link to where blizzard admited to saying they DO included anyone whos ever played the game in the amount of people playing. This is why they now say the number of people that have entered the game not the amount of people playing. As for other reasons not to play the worst game I've ever played just read most of the other posts.
